CHAPTER 17

Belief

(Vanessa)

Children teach us the things that we try to teach them to forget, like how to believe in something we cannot see and how to believe that we are far more than what we do see.

-

“Children are a heritage from the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children.”

Psalms 127:3-4

I can feel her big brown eyes watching me, analysing me, trying desperately to understand me so that she can label me and place me in a nice simple box that can fit easily in her nice simple world.

“Are you… umm… Are you really his princess?" she giggles. “Because you don't dress like you're his princess."

Ignoring her, I continue washing and chopping fruits and vegetables to put out for the other less invasive and troublesome children to eat.

"He says you’re a princess, but I don’t believe him. If you're a princess then why don't you have on a crown like I do?"

I stop chopping, place the knife on the wooden cutting board, and stare at Candice long and hard.

"And… and where is your dress?” She twirls around allowing the bottom of her frilly gown to rise high into the air. “If… if… if you’re a princess,” she says dizzily, almost toppling over. “You should have on a dress and a crown like me. Princesses don’t dress like you, they dress like me. Look at me, look at me, look at me, I’m a princess… you’re not."

I shake my head and bite down on my bottom lip, doing my best to keep my thoughts locked away in my head.

“Why aren’t you wearing a princess dress, huh? Why aren’t you wearing a princess dress like me? Huh? Huh? Tell me… tell me. Where is your crown? Huh, huh, huh, huh, tell me, huh, hu-”

“I'm not wearing a crown or a princess dress because I am not a princess and neither are you!" I declare sharply.

“If you’re not a princess,” she says smugly, both her hands on her hips, while staring me down. “Then why do you live in a castle with a prince?"

I shake my head and sigh out of frustration, "This isn't a castle Candice, this is just a really big house, and Shariffe isn't a prince he's just a regular man who has a lot of money. There are millions of men like him. Castles, princes, and princesses don’t exist in the way you think they do.”

“I don't believe you, you’re wrong,” Candice pouts, a steely expression clouding her owl eyes. "Shariffe is a prince and I am a princess and this is a castle. You said before that I didn’t exist but look I do!" She declares, grabbing hold of the skin on her left arm and tugging on it. “Here, pull it, touch me… I’m real. See, see?” She offers me her arm as proof.

"This is different, Candice."

“No it isn’t.”

“Yes it is,” my voice rises and becomes firm.

“No! No! No, it isn’t!” She screams.
